National Historic Landmark plantation on the Ashley River near Charleston, South Carolina, seat of the Middleton family — including Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Its terraced gardens, begun by Henry Middleton around 1741, are considered the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States. Visited in an MSL field-trip segment.
