Iowa's annual August fair, first held in 1854 and settled on its permanent Des Moines fairgrounds in 1886 — one of the largest state fairs in the country, famous for its life-size butter-cow sculpture, its livestock and food competitions, and for inspiring the novel and musical 'State Fair'. MSL made it a classic late-summer field trip.
