The oldest topiary garden in the United States, on a seven-acre estate in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, maintained by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Its more than 80 sculpted privet, yew, and boxwood figures — many shaped as animals — were created by gardeners Joseph Carreiro and George Mendonca over eight decades.
