Lower East Side bakery started by Mark Isreal in 1994, baking doughnuts from his grandfather Herman's recipe in a tenement basement and delivering them by bicycle to gourmet shops; its first storefront opened on the Lower East Side in 2000. Its all-natural, inventive doughnuts — credited with launching New York's artisanal-doughnut wave — were featured on MSL.
