Main street of the Belmont section of the Bronx — New York's 'real Little Italy', settled by Italian immigrants around the turn of the twentieth century. Its centerpiece, the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, opened in 1940 when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia moved the neighborhood's pushcart vendors indoors; MSL went shopping among its Italian butchers, bakers, and delis.
